Spurs shock Inter, Benfica lead Bordeaux
Date: 03/08/2013
Gareth Bale boosted his sky-rocketing profile with one of the goals which helped Tottenham Hotspur shock Inter Milan 3-0 tonight and help lift Britain"s European gloom.

Bale, with his 21st of the season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen were all on target in a one-sided UEFA Europa League last-16, first leg win at White Hart Lane, which leaves the Italians with a mountain to climb in the return next week.

The only setback for Spurs was seeing Bale booked for a fourth time this season for diving, a caution which will rule him out of the second leg at the San Siro. Tottenham"s win was the only British success in Europe this week.

Elsewhere in the later Europa League fixtures, an own goal from Cedric Carrasso gave Benfica a 1-0 lead over Bordeaux heading into next week"s return, while Levante and Rubin Kazan battled to a 0-0 stalemate in Spain.

Zenit St Petersburg looked to be on their way to a 0-0 draw to take back to Russia, but two goals in the final ten minutes from Marcelo Diaz and Alexander Frei gave hosts Basel the 2-0 win.
